Valentine’s Day is coming up, making it the perfect time to cozy up and watch a good film. We’ve compiled a list of the best romance movies, including rom-coms, musicals, and even action-packed movies that will make your heart pound. We’ve included some more tragic love stories and tearjerkers for those who aren’t feeling like a classic happy ending, such as The Notebook, La La Land, and Titanic. From timeless classics to current favourites, these unique films are all worth your time.

10 Things I Hate About You

A perfect movie when Valentine’s is just around the corner, 10 Things I Hate About You is a take on Shakespeare's play The Taming of the Shrew, set in a ‘90s high school. This movie follows Kat Stratford, a smart, beautiful, funny, and sharp-witted teen, and her younger sister, Bianca, who can't date until Kat does, and Kat doesn't want anything to do with that world. When the new kid Cameron falls for Bianca, he recruits the mysterious Patrick Verona to try to win over and date Kat.

La La Land

La La Land is a musical movie that follows aspiring actress Mia, and jazz pianist Sebastian, who are both pursuing their big dreams in Los Angeles. They cross paths and soon fall in love, but the pressure of their careers and their success soon creates a wedge between their love affair, when they have to choose between chasing either their dreams, or a happy ending for themselves.

Titanic

Titanic is a classic movie that everyone should watch at least once in their lifetime. It's about a young aristocrat named Rose who’s trapped in a marriage she doesn't want, and Jack, a free-spirited artist. They both find themselves aboard the ill-fated Titanic, and soon they have a forbidden love blooming between them. Their connection grows, and when the ship collides with an iceberg, they both must fight for survival amidst the chaos that ensues on the ship.

Baby Driver

Baby Driver follows Baby, a music loving talented getaway driver who drives for the heist mastermind named Doc. When Baby eventually meets diner waitress Debora, he sees a chance to leave getaway driving in the past and start fresh, but that's easier said than done. When Doc pulls him in for one last job, it puts everything and everyone he loves in danger.

Little Women – Greta Gerwig adaption

This film adaptation of the classic novel Little Women follows the March sisters – Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy, through their young adult lives. It's a non-linear film, jumping between a seven-year gap. Little Women shows each sister's journey of self-discovery, love, individual struggles, and ultimately the bond of sisterhood.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a rare sci-fi and psychological take on a romantic drama, focusing on a couple who erase their memories after their breakup. It shows us just how persistent heartbreak can be and how extreme the desire to let go of is, despite the pains caused by memories being a fundamentally human thing and ultimately shaping who we are in life.

The Proposal

This is a classic rom-com that is guaranteed to make you laugh. The Proposal follows book editor Margaret, who forces her assistant, Andrew, to marry her to avoid deportation back to Canada. They must keep up their fake engagement act in Alaska, which proves to be an entertaining challenge due to their opposing personalities, Andrew’s meddling family, and a sceptical immigration official trying to prove their love is a hoax.

The Notebook

The Notebook is a classic which goes back and forth between a 1940s summer romance and an older man retelling the story to a woman with Alzheimer’s. We watch a teenage relationship torn apart due to war and society, as well as the forbidden return of the ever-lasting desire. This movie paints a gorgeous story and proves the enduring power of love.
