1. The Long Walk By Richard Bachman (later found out to be Stephen King under a pen name): A dystopian horror novel about a group of one hundred boys who participate in a televised contest where they have to keep walking at a steady pace nonstop until there is only one boy left standing. I read this book in late 2025 as it was becoming a movie adaptation. I personally really enjoyed it. It was filled with bloody horror, yet I found the characters still were well fleshed out and the story as a whole had good heart to it. It honestly made me go through a whole circle of emotions and it’s honestly the book I’ve had the biggest reaction to in quite a while. I would highly recommend it. I would also recommend the movie, but the book is better and it had way more detail and character depth.
2. That Was Then, This Is Now By S.E. Hinton: After reading The Outsiders in grade eight, I’ve been hooked on S.E. Hinton’s work. That Was Then, This Is Now is a young adult novel about two foster brothers, Mark and Byron whose relationship changes throughout their lives. This book had lots of character depth, and touched on some pretty serious topics such as violence and substance use and abuse. It’s not a long read, but I would still recommend it, especially if you enjoyed The Outsiders.
3. The Perfect Son By Freida McFadden: A thriller about a mother who suspects that her son, Liam, who’s shown psychopathic tendencies is responsible for the disappearance of a teenage girl in their town. I personally liked this book, and thought it had some good twists, but I read it just as I was getting into thrillers and am not sure if I would necessarily enjoy it as much anymore. I read it in late 2024, so a while ago now. Some online reviews I read for it later said they could see the twists coming, but I think I would recommend it anyway.
