Visit the Art Gallery:
The Vancouver Art Gallery is an amazing place to spend a rainy day, and as we know, in Vancouver, there are a lot of those. The building itself is beautiful, with large pillars and detailed architectural designs. Inside, you’ll find both historic and contemporary exhibitions featuring a century’s worth of art produced in British Columbia. Additionally, for youth (age 13-18) entry is completely free.
John Hendry Park (Trout Lake Park):
Trout lake is a wonderful place to walk around and spend a few hours. It is also a great picnic spot! Make some hot chocolate or tea, pack a lunch, and enjoy the park in all of its beauty. The fall colours that can be seen in the trees there are so pretty, and also the weeping willows look majestic. Also, until October 26, you can visit the farmers market on Saturdays at Trout Lake. They have a wide variety of fresh produce, baked goods, and many other local products! However, make sure to check it out in the morning. In my experience sometimes they run out of supply by the afternoon.
Baking:
Even if you are not a natural chef, baking during autumn is a fun and relaxing thing to do alone, or with friends or family. Personally, I bake a lot alone as it is almost therapeutic for me. Autumn is also a great season because you can bake with things like apples or pumpkin! As a bonus, it makes wherever you are smell amazing for hours. If you want to bake something simple, chocolate chip cookies or brownies are always delicious. If you want something a bit more technical, cinnamon rolls are great for fall. We have included a few recipes in this issue, and I encourage you to try them out!
Pumpkin carving:
This one may seem obvious, but it is still such a fun activity and there is something special about trying to find the “perfect pumpkin” to carve. Going to the pumpkin patch will always be the best, but usually I just go to the grocery store to get them, and it can still be fun! It is also cool to see all of the possibilities online. This activity allows you to be very creative and carve whatever design you would like. You can also make it super cozy by putting on your favourite nostalgic Halloween movie or listening to your favourite playlist.
Pick out a book to read:
Sometimes getting lost in a good book is the best activity of them all. It is very low effort and can bring so much joy. You could go to the library, or even a local bookstore (Canterbury Tales on Commercial Drive is my favourite!) and pick out a good book to read. During fall, something spooky like a murder mystery can be a lot of fun. For a cozy setting, you can also go to a local cafe, bring a blanket to a park, or just be cozy in the comfort of your home.
Exploring the sea wall:
The sea wall is another great place to enjoy the fall foliage and be outdoors. Exploring either on foot or by bike is a great way to get beautiful views of the city. Below is a link to a map of the seawall to help you on your journey!
