Top Movies of 2023

In June 2023, the long-anticipated Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse came out in theaters. Within less than two weeks, it made more at the box office than the first film, Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse. It quickly became Sony Pictures Animation's highest-grossing film. Watchers are already prepared for the next film, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, even though it will take another few years to come out. It was a two hour and twenty minute masterpiece of animation and I would recommend this movie to anyone who appreciates super-heros (Spider-Man), art, or animated films.
The Little Mermaid live action movie was released in May 2023. The movie is two hours and fifteen minutes long. The original animation was released in 1989. Impressively, this movie’s plot closely follows the original’s. Actress Halle Bailey became the new face of Princess Ariel, inspiring many young Brown and Black girls. Children’s reactions to the trailer flooded social media in the months prior to the release. This is one of, if not the first, recreation of a film with actors and actresses of differing ethnicities from the animation or original. If you like Disney movies or the recreations, you’ll love this one!
Barbie was released in July of 2023. This movie and Oppenheimer influenced many trends on social media, such as the differing outfits to the “Hi Barbie!” “Hi Ken!” audio and the vlogs about girlhood to Billie Eilish’s new song “What Was I Made For,” written for the movie. There was so much pink in the movie sets that we ran out of pink paint! The runtime of the movie is an hour and fifty-four minutes. This movie is extremely fun and meant for all audiences, but it discusses the reality of sexism and feminism, of motherhood and girlhood. Tons of viewers went into theaters smiling and left them crying.
