Valentine’s Day Doesn't Have To Be About Romance

By Lia Low

Yes, Valentine’s Day is about love, but that does not mean it is romantic love. I have heard people say this, whether it is to reassure a single friend third-wheeling or simply to comfort themselves, but many people outside of romantic relationships still feel hatred towards February 14th. In many short form videos (eg. Instagram reels, TikToks) groups of friends are shown celebrating ‘Galentine’s Day’ or ‘Palentine’s Day.’ In these videos, friends will take part in activities that are deemed exclusive to romantic partners. If you are looking for inspiration for your own Valentine’s Day activities, then you have found the right article!

To start, Templeton usually has Valentine Grams, Crush Grams, or Rose Grams thanks to the Leos Club. They tend to range from $2-5 per item and will likely be sold in the foyer. Make sure to listen to the upcoming announcements if you are interested!

A little further in our neighborhood and community, we have plenty of coffee shops, such as Platform 7, Doe Coffee, and East Cafe, that would all make for a cute study date. All of them have tasty and unique pastries and drinks. I highly recommend the matcha croissant from Doe Coffee, and if you are looking for croffles, East Cafe has ‘em! Take yourself and a friend on a fun and flavourful journey by trying something new.

A personal recommendation for a group celebration is to get together for a picnic, weather permitting. You and your friends can make the food and snacks together or all pitch in to buy some. This is also a great opportunity to try the wine glass cake trend. As long as it is not an ice cream cake, this should be an easy sprinkle of extra fun.

Depending on the weather, another option is to partake in snow activities, such as building a snowman. Of course there are options like skiing and snowboarding, but that may be out of reach for some people. Something more convenient may be ice-skating with a friend or a whole group. Britannia’s ice rink is within walking distance of Templeton and there are also other rinks, such as Robson Square, where skating is free (excluding rentals).

Another suggestion that may be better for a group is karaoke! There are places you can go for karaoke, but most are not within Templeton’s proximity. This could be done at home as long as you have a spare device and a lot of energy. Hype up your friends!

Lastly I want to point out that handmade gifts and cards are always a thoughtful gift. You cannot go wrong! You can add funny pick-up lines and your own personal touches, making the gift just right for your special person. A couple ideas that some may like for handmade and homemade gifts are cookies, a drawing, a poem, or even jewelry. For a Swiftie, you might want to consider friendship bracelets.

Happy Valentine’s Day from the Titan Tribune!
